If you have been a lawful permanent resident of the United States for at least five years and meet certain other eligibility requirements, you are able to apply for naturalization. But what exactly does the naturalization process look like? The process of applying for US citizenship is long and often difficult to navigate, but here are the biggest steps involved in becoming a naturalized citizen.
- Complete and submit an application. The naturalization application is highly detailed and intensive. You’ll want to work with an immigration attorney to make sure no steps are missed or unintentionally skipped over, otherwise you risk denial before the rest of the naturalization process even starts.
- Attend a biometrics appointment. You’ll need certain biometrics taken, namely your fingerprints, signature, and passport-style photo, once the application has been accepted. All information regarding when and where your appointment is will be sent to you.
- Attend an interview and take the necessary tests. You will need to be interviewed at a USCIS office. There, you’ll also take English and civics tests.
- Take the Oath of Allegiance. This is the final step in the naturalization process, and you cannot miss it. If all of the previous steps of the application process are approved, you will be given information regarding the oath ceremony and what to bring with you, including your permanent residency card that you will turn in.
